Naming Your Business
By Laurie | March 9, 2008
As I was driving this week I passed a business called Unique Body Shop. I was passing through an industrial neighborhood; therefore I can only surmise that this business was for auto repair.
Yet it gave me cause to ponder a moment about the name. My initial thoughts were:
- Start your business at the beginning of the alphabet so that you’re closer to the front of the line in listings, directories, phone books.
- What exactly is “unique” about the body shop? By definition the words means: specific, unusual, and alone. Perhaps the owners were attempting to create an image of “second to none”. Yet it conjured up ideas of “strange and unusual” rather than elite.
- Are the results unique? Do you end up with a tricked up Buick?
- Are the owners unique? Is it an all female crew? Do they all have uni-brows, a sixth toe or a third nipple? What makes them unique?
- Perhaps it’s not a vehicle repair shop at all, rater an exercise club or plastic surgeon. Maybe the name is suggesting it is a great place for patrons who have unique bodies. But then what makes a unique body?
When someone would ask me “What’s wrong?” I used to answer, “Nothing. Except my thighs are too big, my eyes are too close and my nose is too long.” I bet that would qualify as a unique body; wouldn’t you agree? Do you get an image of a cross-eyes elephant?
Anyhoo – all this to point out the importance of naming a business. I somehow think the owners of Unique Body Shop may not be achieving the results they had hoped for merely due to the name of their business.

ROFLMAO “do they all have a uni-brow, 6th toe or third nipple” ROFL ROFL
and I’m with you on giving your business name some thought.
I think I’ve accomplished that with the names of my businesses…all tell what they are and few are at top end of alphabet!

Was wondering if “first letters of alpha” still applied in the day and age of comp. This answers my question.
Want to start a gift store with 1/2 handmade wood, painted stuff and 1/2 retail (candles and such) Wanted to use last name “Webber’s Country Crafts” - thinking about this for years, but “W” is not going to work and am re-thinking “country” - reminds me of grandma’s, 80’s country decor. Husband’s first name is Andy???, but kinda wanted it to be something together or not at all. We do lots of Americana type stuff???? THX- J.D.
